In a bid to empower underprivileged women, 60 sewing machines were distributed among destitute and disadvantaged women at an event organised by Bashundhara Shuvosangho on Saturday. The distribution ceremony took place at Jagannathpur Modern Auditorium in Bancharampur upazila.
Speaking as the chief guest, Bashundhara Group Adviser Moynal Hossain Chowdhury said, “For a household to become self-reliant, work is essential. Through three months of training and the sewing machines handed over today, women can earn an income and achieve economic independence.”
He added that Bashundhara Group has long been supporting disadvantaged communities through interest-free loans, scholarships for meritorious students, free medicine and treatment for the sick, food for orphans, and establishing schools in remote areas. Upazila Women Affairs Officer Rabeya Jahan Eva hailed the initiative as a meaningful step to empower women.
“Bashundhara Group is extending economic support to underprivileged women so they can stand on their own feet. If other industrial groups came forward in the same way, the country’s economy would progress much faster,” she said.
The event was also addressed by Bashundhara Shuvosangho Director Zakaria Zaman, Prof Chan Mia Sarkar, Bashundhara Foundation DGM Maimun Kabir, and former upazila chairman Md Dudh Mia, among others.
Beneficiaries expressed their gratitude upon receiving the sewing machines. Sumi Akter, a widow from Dariadaulat village, said, “After my husband’s death, running the household became very difficult. Now I can earn from home with this machine.”
Another recipient, Bobita Rani Shil of Ulukandi village, said her husband’s barbering income was insufficient for their six-member family. “Often we had to take loans to survive. Now, with this sewing machine, I can contribute to household expenses,” she said.
School student Sanjida Akter added, “My family struggles to cover my education expenses. With this machine, I can earn by sewing clothes and support both my studies and household costs.” Speakers urged the beneficiaries to make full and effective use of the sewing machines to build self-reliant futures.
